Green Nevada
Early in 2010, on behalf of several non-profit clients, we organized a tele-townhall for Sen. Reid with NV faith and veterans communities on the moral and national security implications of climate change. Lists for the call were built from openers from an extensive email campaign conducted in NV, which were then cross-matched against Catalist’s databases. We called people before the townhall informing them it was coming and giving a call-in number. Then we called through the list during the call providing people the option to simply be connected. The result of our email outreach and calls was participation by over 22,000 participants for the call, seven times the number expected by Reid’s staff based on past events. This event was so successful and appreciated by Reid’s staff that it opened countless doors to the Majority Leader’s office. Later in the year, our field organizer (who would later be hired by the Reid campaign to do faith and AA outreach) organized pastors to take out an ad in the largest paper urging Sen. Reid to show leadership on the climate bill. Based on the strength of relationships we formed with his office, Reid agreed to meet with the pastors on just two days notice, and, after speaking with them for half an hour, committed to prioritizing concerns of the faith community in any climate bill that came to the floor.
